I've helped thousands of Indians with low CIBIL scores get their first credit card and rebuild their credit history. As someone who personally recovered from a 520 CIBIL score to 780+, I understand the challenges you face. My recommendations are based on real approval data and user feedback, not just bank marketing materials.
Connect on LinkedInIf you have a low CIBIL score — whether it's 550, 600, or even below 500 — getting a credit card might seem impossible. Banks typically require a minimum CIBIL score of 700-750 for regular credit cards. But here's what most people don't know: there are legitimate ways to get a credit card without a perfect credit score, and using one responsibly is actually the fastest way to rebuild your credit.
I've personally gone through this journey. In 2019, my CIBIL score dropped to 520 after a missed EMI during a job transition. Every bank rejected my credit card applications. That's when I discovered secured credit cards — and within 18 months, my score was back to 780. Now I help others navigate this same path.
These cards require a Fixed Deposit as collateral. Your credit limit is 75-90% of FD value. Best for CIBIL scores below 650 or no credit history.
Some fintech and banks offer unsecured cards to applicants with 600-700 scores. Limited options but no FD needed.
If you have a salary account with a bank, they may offer credit cards based on your salary credits rather than CIBIL score.
Designed for those with no credit history (New to Credit). Lower limits but easier approval for students and young professionals.
I've personally verified approval criteria for each card below. These are the credit cards that actually approve applicants with low CIBIL scores, bad credit history, or no credit history at all. Last updated: May 8, 2026.

Before applying, know where you stand. Get your free CIBIL score from CIBIL's website, Paytm, or your bank's app. This doesn't affect your score. Understanding your score helps you choose the right card type.
If your CIBIL score is below 650, don't waste time applying for regular cards — you'll only get rejections that further hurt your score. Go directly for a secured credit card against FD. HDFC, ICICI, and SBI are my top recommendations.
Open an FD with the bank offering the secured card. Minimum is usually ₹10,000-25,000. The FD continues earning interest (5-7% p.a.) while you use the card. You can withdraw the FD after closing the card or upgrading.
Apply online or visit the branch. Documents needed: PAN card, Aadhaar, FD receipt, passport photo. Approval is usually within 2-5 days since the FD acts as security. Credit limit will be 75-90% of your FD amount.
Use the card for small regular purchases (₹2,000-5,000/month). Always pay FULL bill before due date — not minimum due. Keep utilization below 30%. In 6-12 months, your CIBIL score can improve by 50-100 points, qualifying you for regular unsecured cards.
Getting a credit card with a low CIBIL score is just the first step. The real goal is rebuilding your credit so you can access better financial products in the future. Here's exactly how I improved my score from 520 to 780 in 18 months using a secured credit card:
Never pay just the minimum due. Always clear 100% of your outstanding before the due date. This is the #1 factor affecting your CIBIL score.
If your limit is ₹50,000, don't use more than ₹15,000. High utilization signals credit hunger and hurts your score even if you pay on time.
Link your card to auto-debit for full payment. This ensures you never miss a due date even if you forget. One missed payment can drop your score by 50-100 points.
Don't just keep the card idle. Use it for regular small purchases — groceries, subscriptions, utility bills. Active accounts with good behavior boost your score faster.
Each credit card application creates a "hard inquiry" that drops your score by 5-10 points. With a low score, focus on one card and build history first.
Even one payment missed by 30+ days gets reported to CIBIL and stays on your record for 7 years. Set multiple reminders or use auto-pay.
Don't let a low CIBIL score hold you back. Start with a secured credit card today and watch your credit score improve month by month.
