A general bill is the simplest, most universal receipt format â a clean cash memo or service bill that records a transaction without GST fields, industry-specific layouts, or complicated tax breakups. Our free general bill generator creates a print-ready PDF in seconds, designed for the millions of Indian transactions where a tax invoice is not required: kirana cash sales, freelancer service receipts, tutor monthly bills, household service charges, hobby seller transactions, and any business below the GST registration threshold.
If your business is GST-registered and your customer needs to claim input tax credit, use our GST invoice generator instead. If you run a restaurant, clinic, or pharmacy, use the industry-specific template that matches your business. The general bill exists for everything else: the small, the simple, the universal.
A general bill â also called a cash memo, simple bill, generic receipt, or in GST parlance a Bill of Supply when GST is not being charged â is a basic transaction record between a seller and a buyer. It documents what was sold, for how much, and to whom, without the elaborate tax compliance fields that a full GST tax invoice requires.
In Indian commercial practice, a general bill is the everyday receipt used across millions of small transactions: the kirana store owner handing a slip after a Rs. 350 purchase, a freelance graphic designer billing a small business for a logo, a home tutor's monthly fee receipt, an electrician's bill for repair work, a tailor's stitching charges, a hobby baker's order receipt. The format is intentionally lightweight â designed for transactions that don't need a GSTIN, HSN code, or tax breakup.
For GST-compliant invoicing, head to our dedicated GST Invoice Generator â it includes GSTIN, HSN/SAC, and full tax breakup fields.
The general bill is deliberately minimal but should still cover these baseline fields to be acceptable as proof of payment.
Business or individual name, full address, and contact number. Include a business logo if you want a branded look.
For B2C cash sales, the customer name is optional. For service bills or follow-up payments, include the customer's name and contact.
A sequential bill number and the date of issue. Helps with personal record-keeping and any future query.
Description of each item or service, quantity (for goods) or hours (for services), unit rate, and the line total.
Sum of all line items, any discount applied, and the grand total payable. No GST fields needed for a non-GST bill.
Cash, UPI, card, bank transfer, cheque, or wallet â record how the payment was actually received.
A simple signature, business seal, or pre-printed brand mark to give the bill its evidentiary value.
Under the Indian Stamp Act, cash receipts above Rs. 5,000 require a Re. 1 revenue stamp signed across by the recipient. Digital payments don't need this.
In GST law, the formal term for a bill that does not charge GST is Bill of Supply. It is the document a GST-registered business must issue when it cannot or should not collect GST â for example, when supplying exempt goods (fresh fruits, milk, healthcare services) or when operating under the composition scheme that bars GST collection from customers.
A Bill of Supply looks structurally similar to our general bill format: seller details, buyer details (optional for unregistered buyers), description of goods or services, quantity, total amount, and signature. The difference is that the words "Bill of Supply" should appear prominently on the document instead of "Tax Invoice," and no GST amount appears anywhere on the bill.
Our general bill format works as a Bill of Supply substitute for composition dealers and exempt suppliers. If your composition-scheme certificate requires the exact phrase "Bill of Supply" on the document, simply note that in the template name field or replace the title before downloading.

A general bill is a simple, universal-format receipt or cash memo that records a transaction between a seller and a customer without industry-specific fields or GST charging. It is the most common everyday bill format used by kirana stores, freelancers, tutors, electricians, plumbers, hobby sellers, and any small operator whose business is not GST-registered or whose customer is paying for a one-off service.
Use a general bill when your business is not registered under GST (turnover below Rs. 40 lakh for goods or Rs. 20 lakh for services), when you are a composition scheme dealer issuing a Bill of Supply, when the customer does not need a tax invoice, or for one-off informal transactions. If your business is GST-registered and you are selling to a customer who needs input tax credit, use our GST invoice generator instead.
A Bill of Supply is a GST-recognised document used by composition-scheme dealers and suppliers of GST-exempt goods or services. It records the transaction without charging GST and is the correct format when GST cannot or should not be collected. Our general bill format is compatible with Bill of Supply requirements when GST fields are left out.
Yes. A general bill is a legally valid record of a transaction in India, especially for B2C cash and digital payments below GST thresholds. It serves as proof of payment for both seller and buyer. For cash receipts above Rs. 5,000, the Indian Stamp Act requires a Re. 1 revenue stamp affixed and signed by the recipient.
A complete general bill includes the seller's name and address, customer's name (optional for B2C), bill number and date, itemised list of goods or services with quantity and rate, subtotal, any discount, total amount payable, payment mode (cash, UPI, card), and the seller's signature or stamp. The format is intentionally simple â no GSTIN, no HSN/SAC codes, no tax breakup are required.
Yes. Freelance writers, designers, photographers, home tutors, music teachers, fitness trainers, and any independent professional below the GST threshold can use the general bill as a simple invoice for client billing. Add your service description, rate, and total â the format is professional enough for personal-services billing without GST overhead.
Yes. The general bill generator supports custom business name and address fields, giving the bill a professional, branded appearance. Useful for freelancers, small shops, and household service providers who want consistent branding across all customer receipts.
